June Wright Cates, age 95, of Brady, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 12, 2013 in Brady. She was born June 5, 1918 in Nugent, Texas to Lonnie Joe Wright and Iva Jackie (Roberts) Wright. She was the only girl of four children. Her first year of school was spent in Caney, Oklahoma. Later she moved with her family to Durant. June began her fourth grade year in Bokchito, Oklahoma where she continued her schooling through her high school years. While in high school June played the leading roles in both Junior and senior plays. She was also active in church and participated in social gatherings of the town and enjoyed riding her horse “Old Glenn”. After high school June was involved with campaigning for her dad for the office of County Commissioner and later for the office of County Clerk. Her dad was successful in winning both offices.
Later in June’s life, she met Ray Cates by introduction of a friend. Ray lived in Whitewright Texas. The couple dated for two years and married April 20, 1940 in Durant. Ray was a traveling salesman for the David G. Platter Coffee Company in Denison Texas. The headquarters were located in Ardmore, OK, where Ray and June lived for a while after they were married.
After a time, Ray and June moved to Paris, TX where Ray was employed by the J.C. Penny Company. While living in Paris, their lives were changed forever when they learned they were to have twin girls, Jan and Ann. The First Baptist Church was always a big part of the Cates’ family. Their daughters grew up in a Christian atmosphere with June reading stories from the bible to them so they would learn about Jesus and His love for them. Their next door neighbor growing up was the local high school football coach and his family. The coach’s son, Raymond Berry, would go on to play football at Southern Methodist University and then to the NFL where he played for the Baltimore Colts and set many records.
In December of 1954, Ray moved June and the family to Brady where Ray had transferred to as Manager of the J.C. Penney store. Ray and June were married for 64 years until Ray’s death on February 10, 2005. June enjoyed shopping for clothes, shoes, purses and jewelry. Of course, everything had to match. She loved to go to the Brady Bulldog Football games and loved to visit with friends and family. She enjoyed going to the First Baptist Church in Brady where she was a member for many years. Her special love was her dachshund, “Benji”. June’s daughters were blessed to have such a sweet Christian mother and friend.
